Hawaii Five-0 is an American police procedural drama television series and a re-imagining of the original 1968–80 television series. The series is produced by K/O Paper Products and 101st Street Television in association with CBS Productions. Hawaii Five-0 debuted on CBS, the same network that aired the original version. Like the original version, it follows an elite state police unit/task force set up to fight crime in the state of Hawaii. It premiered on Monday, September 20, 2010, and the title of the new show uses a zero in place of the letter "O" in the original title.
In the new version, Steve McGarret is a naval officer who works with a special team to combat terrorists. After capturing one suspected in South Korea, Steve is preparing to take him back to America. On the way, discovers that his father was kidnapped and murdered by the brother of his prisoner. Moving away from military service, McGarret arrives in Hawaii for the funeral of his father and to find clues that lead to the killer. His return puts him back in touch with his sister Mary Ann (Taryn Manning), with whom he maintains poor relations.
Upon arrival, Governor Jameson (Jean Smart, Samantha's Who?) offers him the chance to create a task force with complete immunity and resources to wipe all the terrorism and organized crime of the island. Although reluctant at first, McGarret ends up accepting the position to be able to freely investigate the death of his father. Completing the Task Force is Danny "Danno" Williams (Scott Caan of Ocean's Eleven and a secret), a police veteran who has made a career in the Police Department of New Jersey. Recently divorced, he is transferred to Hawaii at his own request, to be closer to her daughter eight years, Grace.
Also on the team are Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim of "Lost") and Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park of "Battlestar Galactica"). The first is a former Honolulu police detective and former pupil's father McGarret. Falsely accused of corruption, Kelly now works as a security. Kono is his cousin, newly formed by the Police Academy, which is eager to start her career.
